What is a Fat Quarter used in Quilting

Put simply a fat quarter is a squarish piece of 100% cotton patchwork fabric.
The sizing is approximately Imperial  18" x 21" or Metric  50cm x 54cm
Mostly the fabric is cut from either 1 yard or 1 metre and quartered.

When beginning Quilting, most of us start a "Stash". This is usually quilting fabrics that we have collected (or hoarded away) to start our chosen work.
